Travelling by train between Salzburg and Hallstatt (or Obertraun) means using the local ferry getting you to/from the train station on the opposite side of the Hallstatt lake + a change-over in Attnang-Puchheim. Travel between Salzburg and Hallstatt (or Obertraun) by public transport (i.e. the local bus service or trains) takes approximately 2hours 20minutes and includes a change-over in Bad Ischl.
